Koch Chemie LeatherLock is the long-lasting leather protectant from the Koch Chemie The Finisher line, engineered to shield car interior leather against UV damage, body oils, dye transfer from clothing and the gradual wear that turns daily-driven leather into cracked, faded leather over time. Developed in the Koch Chemie laboratories in Unna, Germany, LeatherLock forms a breathable protective film that absorbs into the surface without leaving a greasy sheen.
Where many leather protectants leave a sticky residue or oily shine that attracts dust, LeatherLock dries to a matte natural finish that looks like factory leather. The German formulation contains UV inhibitors that slow the photo-degradation that fades and stiffens leather, plus barrier agents that prevent jean dye and body oils from soaking into the material. Apply after LeatherTexClean for a complete cleaning-protection workflow, or as a standalone refresh every 6 to 8 weeks.
Pro tip: apply LeatherLock every 6 to 8 weeks on daily-driven leather to maintain UV protection. For garage-kept weekend cars, every 3 to 4 months is sufficient. Re-application is faster than the first treatment because the previous layer reduces absorption time.
Important: never apply LeatherLock to dirty or contaminated leather. The protective film traps whatever is on the surface underneath it, including body oils and dye transfer. Always clean first with LeatherTexClean.
Why does leather need a protectant?
Modern car leather is finished with a polyurethane coating over a leather substrate. UV exposure, body oils and dye transfer gradually break down this coating, leading to fading, stiffening and cracking. A regular protectant like LeatherLock slows this degradation and significantly extends the useful life of automotive leather.
Will LeatherLock make my leather slippery?
No. LeatherLock dries to a matte natural finish that maintains the grip of factory leather. Products that leave a slippery or greasy feel are typically lower-quality oil-based protectants. LeatherLock uses a film-forming chemistry that adheres to the leather surface without affecting grip or comfort.
Can I use LeatherLock on perforated leather?
Yes. Apply LeatherLock to the applicator pad rather than directly to the leather, then work the product across the perforations gently. The breathable formulation does not clog perforation holes, but applying to the pad rather than the surface gives more control over product distribution.
What is the difference between LeatherLock and a leather conditioner?
Leather conditioners typically focus on restoring suppleness with oils that soak into the leather. LeatherLock is a protective film that shields the surface without softening the material. For modern coated automotive leather, protection is more important than conditioning. For old uncoated leather or vintage interiors, a dedicated conditioner may be more appropriate.
Should I apply LeatherLock to brand-new leather?
Yes. Even factory-fresh leather benefits from added UV protection and body-oil barrier from day one. Treating new leather with LeatherLock before it accumulates any contamination provides the longest possible protective benefit.
Where is LeatherLock made?
Koch Chemie LeatherLock is formulated and bottled in Germany by Koch Chemie GmbH at their headquarters in Unna. The Rag Company Europe is an authorised dealer of the Koch Chemie The Finisher line for Europe.
