Mozart (1756-1791)
Description:
Glass harmonica and square piano (piano=organ) are also featured in this 2-CD set of Mozart's rare works! This 2-CD set features Mozart's rarely performed works. The two CDs feature special instruments such as the glass harmonica and the square piano (piano=organ), all of which are performed at the very highest level. Louis-Noël Bestion de Cambourat, born in 1989, is a French harpsichordist and organist. He studied under Olivier Beaumont and Blandine Lannoux, and has appeared in the Harmonia Nova series (HMN 916113). He has studied with Blandine Lannoux and appeared in the Harmonia Nova series (HMN 916113). The two-disc set is a treasure chest of musical gems, including church sonatas (single-movement sonata form pieces used in masses), commissioned works, and works to introduce vocalists and instruments (such as the rarely-heard glass harmonica). The contents of the CDs also show that Mozart had considerable skill and understanding of the organ as well. The harpsichord is also played on an instrument from Mozart's time, and this 2-disc set is filled with extraordinary attention to detail. [Glass harmonica] In 1743, an Irishman named Puckeridge came up with the idea of rubbing the rim of a footed glass filled with water to make a sound and play it.The glass harmonica was perfected in 1761, and consisted of 20 to 54 glasses (37 was the standard size) fitted to a stick in such a way that they did not touch each other, and the diameter of the glasses determined the pitch of the note. The player plays by rubbing the rim of the glass with wet fingers. The instrument was banned in several German cities and disappeared in 1835 because its tone scared animals, made strong men fall over in an hour, and drove the player insane (40% of the material used at the time was lead glass). However, Paganini called it the "angel organ," and in addition to Mozart, Beethoven, Donizetti, and R. Strauss also wrote works for it. The instrument played here was manufactured in the late 20th century by master glassworker Gerhard Finkenbeiner. Thomas Bloch, who plays it, is one of the few professional players who play it. [Square Organ] Also called a piano organ, a square organ combines the functions of both an organ and a piano. It can be played as an organ, as a piano, or as both an organ and a piano at the same time. King International, Inc.
