1991 Jaguar XJR-14.

For 1991, the FIA introduced new rules for its top Sportscar Racing Championship, designed to replace the Group C formula which had proved so successful. The new formula used 3.5 litre naturally aspirated engines and custom designed lightweight bodywork - very similar to the current F1 rules.

For the new formula, Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) commissioned a design from Ross Brawn and John Piper - the greater engine power and much freer fuel consumption regulations put advanced aerodynamics and high downforce at the sharp edge of the design concept. These cars were much faster in the corners than the previous Group C cars had been.

The XJR-14, in the purple livery of long-time sponsor Silk Cut, was powered by the existing 3.5 litre Ford HB V8, rebadged as Jaguar, tuned to deliver 650bhp at 11,500rpm.

3 chassis were built and used throughout 1991 - #591, #691 and #791, proving far superior to opposition from Peugeot and Mercedes until the Peugeot 905B caught up and began winning around the mid point of the season. This did not prevent Teo Fabi from becoming drivers' champion and Jaguar winning the manufacturers' title.

The car illustrated here is the 1991 Silverstone winning car, driven by Teo Fabi and Derek Warwick, even though the race began with Fabi and Brundle paired together, until a team decision opted to race with Fabi and Warwick, leaving Brundle to race the no.3 car alone. He finished 3rd. - 4 laps behind the winner.
