Berlioz (1803-1869)
Description:
Roger Norrington was Principal Conductor of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra for 13 years, from 1998 to 2011. This box set contains five Berlioz works recorded during that period. Norrington developed his own style called "Stuttgart Sound," which is based on non-vibrato playing of string instruments, adjusting the size and arrangement of the orchestra to reproduce the performance at the time of composition, and he played with a beautiful sound that retains a sense of transparency. But this approach remains unchanged in these Berlioz performances. The pure tone of the Symphonie fantastique and the oratorio "The Infancy of Christ", as well as the "Requiem for the Dead", which is known for its wide dynamic range, are also in line with this approach, with a large orchestra including three choirs and banda, Norrington's true essence can be heard in the divine music he delivers. The opera "Benvenuto Cellini," featuring a real-life Italian Renaissance sculptor, was performed in its Weimar premiere in two acts. The opera "Benvenuto Cellini," also in two acts, is performed in its Weimar premiere, and features a wonderful solo singer. Naxos Japan
