Jackie Robinson Signed First Edition, Wait Till Next Year. Significant Civil Rights Inscription. JSA

Offered here is a first edition of Wait Till Next Year (1960) boldly signed and inscribed by Jackie Robinson on July 19, 1960. While Robinson signatures are always desirable, the content and context of this powerful inscription elevate this example far beyond a typical signed book.

The book was inscribed to Doug Rosenthal, Senior Vice President of Chock Full o’ Nuts, the company where Robinson himself served as Vice President of Personnel following his historic baseball career. Robinson had been recruited by founder William Black and became one of the first Black executives at a major American corporation, extending his role as a pioneer for equality beyond the baseball field.

Robinson’s inscription reads in part:

“To Doug Rosenthal, With best wishes. I appreciate your great concern for the welfare of all people. If there were more people interested there would be no need for a book like ‘Wait Till Next Year.’ I hope you enjoy it.”
— Jackie Robinson
July 19, 1960

This message is what makes the piece truly important. Robinson is not simply offering a polite dedication; he is expressing a clear statement about social responsibility and racial progress, themes that defined his life after breaking baseball’s color barrier. His words acknowledge Rosenthal’s concern for “the welfare of all people,” and the remark that a book like Wait Till Next Year would be unnecessary if more people shared that concern directly reflects the broader civil rights struggle Robinson helped bring into the national conversation.

Published by Random House and co-written with Carl T. Rowan, Wait Till Next Year is Robinson’s candid reflection on the hostility and pressure he faced integrating Major League Baseball and his growing involvement in the civil rights movement. The inscription reinforces that legacy, transforming the book from a simple signed copy into a personal expression of Robinson’s philosophy and activism during a pivotal moment in American history.

Many copies of this title exist, and some are signed. Very few carry an inscription with this level of meaning tied directly to Robinson’s civil rights mission and written to a colleague within the same progressive company that employed him. The historical relevance of Robinson’s words — rather than the autograph alone — is what makes this example especially compelling.

For collectors of Jackie Robinson material, civil rights history, or significant association copies, this is an outstanding piece. It captures Robinson not just as a baseball legend, but as a leader whose influence extended far beyond the game.
