A rare and historically significant complete set of eleven Frank Stella "Black Series" offset lithographs, 1967 — nine framed, with the original folder. A unified collection of prints after one of the most celebrated and influential series in the history of postwar American art.
Frank Stella (American, 1936–2024) was among the most important and consequential American artists of the 20th century. His legendary Black Paintings series (1958–1960) — large canvases of black enamel with thin pinstripe gaps following the shape of the canvas — represented a radical break from Abstract Expressionism and became a founding document of American Minimalism. Stella's declaration "What you see is what you see" became one of the defining statements of postwar art.
The 1967 Black Series lithographs translate the formal language of those celebrated paintings into print — geometric, austere, and visually commanding. Each composition distills Stella's exploration of shape, line, and the relationship between image and support into a concentrated graphic statement. Together as a set of eleven, they present a comprehensive survey of the Black Series vocabulary.
Frank Stella passed away in May 2024 — his death, as with all major artists, has brought renewed attention and increased collector interest to his work at every level of the market.
