The city of Shiraz, the capital of Fars Province in southwestern Iran, was one of the oldest cities of ancient Persia. Shiraz is known worldwide as a city of lush gardens, flowers and wine. The small villages and nomadic tribes surrounding the city have a large carpet weaving culture and tradition, with both nomadic hand-knotted carpets and hand-woven kilims being produced in the region. The province is also home to the famous Gashgai tribe, meaning the two carpet types share much inspiration and similarity.

The Gashgai carpets usually have a typical reddish-brown base color. The Gashgai draw inspiration from their everyday surroundings in their designs. The motifs include human figures, animals such as horses and birds, but also trees and flowers. The nomads do not stick to a given design or template, but rather create according to their memories and personal taste. The carpets often have a medallion in the middle, which is then repeated in the corners. The Gashgai are known for their high-quality nomadic carpets.
