Achieve structural, D4 water-resistant bonds, even when surfaces are not perfectly flat. Unobond is the single-pack polyurethane adhesive engineered to deliver superior strength across diverse construction materials. It expands slightly to maximise contact and bond integrity, ensuring lasting performance in challenging conditions.
Why this product exists
Unobond was formulated as a structural-grade, moisture-curing polyurethane adhesive. It simplifies demanding bonding jobs by offering a D4 water-resistant bond in a single-pack, gel consistency. Its key design feature is a controlled, slight expansion that allows it to fill minor surface irregularities, increasing the effective bonded area and preventing weak points due to voids. This ensures maximum adhesion and long-term durability across a wide range of materials.
The numbers that matter
- D4 Water Resistance: This isn't just water-resistant; Unobond provides a D4 classification, which means it can withstand a 72-hour boiling water test. Use it with confidence for exterior woodwork, marine environments, or anywhere persistent moisture is a factor.
- Tensile Strength 5N/mm²: This adhesive delivers a structural bond. Once cured, the joint is deemed structural, making it reliable for critical applications in furniture, joinery, and general construction.
- Pressing Time 1 hour @ 0.6 N/mm²: Your work can move faster. Unobond achieves initial cure and bond strength within 60 minutes under pressure, improving job site efficiency for clamping or fastening.
- Working Time 15 minutes @ 23ºC & 50% RH: This window provides enough time for precise assembly and clamping without rushing. It ensures you can align and secure components correctly for optimal bond formation.
What it's like to use
Unobond is ready to use from the cartridge; no mixing is required. For optimal performance, ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free of contaminants. At least one of the surfaces must contain moisture to activate the curing process. For impervious substrates, pre-wipe with Adheseal Xylene Solvent. Apply Unobond to one surface, maintaining a glue line thickness between 0.1mm to 0.25mm. Bring surfaces together immediately and apply firm, even pressure. Clamp softwoods at 50 PSI and hardwoods at 150 PSI for at least 60 minutes. Allow any squeezed-out adhesive to dry before mechanical removal with a sharp blade. Clean wet tools and spills with Adheseal Xylene Solvent, and use Adheseal Hand Wipes for skin cleanup.
Where this product excels
- Joinery and Cabinet Manufacturing: Bond furniture components, attach floor mouldings, or secure skirting boards with a fast-setting, high-strength adhesive that tolerates slight irregularities in timber and board products.
- Wooden Boat Building and Exterior Timber: Rely on its D4 water resistance for robust, long-lasting bonds in demanding marine environments and exposed exterior timber applications where moisture is a constant challenge.
- General Construction Bonding: Join common building materials like metal, wood, concrete, plasterboard, and FC sheeting. Its versatility simplifies adhesive selection for varied substrate combinations.
- Display Signs and Mixed Materials: Secure various elements in display signs or other mixed-material assemblies. Unobond adheres effectively to metals, board products, and certain plastics, reducing the need for multiple specialised adhesives.
How it fits in a real system
Unobond is frequently used as a critical structural adhesive in timber construction and assembly. For tongue-and-groove flooring systems, apply a bead into the groove of each panel before mating. The slight expansion of Unobond fills any voids, significantly reducing floor squeaks and enhancing the overall stability of the installed floor. This application leverages the foaming action to deliver a quieter, more solid finish in subfloor and flooring installations.
Choose this when
- When D4 water resistance is mandatory: For exterior joinery, boat building, or any application where a waterproof, structural bond is essential.
- When you need a single-pack structural adhesive: For efficient, high-strength bonding of timber, metals, concrete, and many board products without mixing.
- When surfaces have minor irregularities: The slight foaming action ensures maximum contact and bond area, even if surfaces are not perfectly flat.
- When fast pressing times are critical: Achieve initial bond strength and release clamping pressure in as little as 60 minutes, speeding up project timelines.
Don't use this when
- Not for: Gap filling. Using Unobond as a gap filler significantly reduces its structural strength. For gap filling, use a dedicated product like Adheseal GapFilla.
- Not for: Applications without clamping or pressure. Maximum strength requires constant pressure during the initial cure to form a thin, strong glue line.
- Not for: Totally confined spaces. Unobond requires atmospheric humidity or moisture from the substrate to cure. It will not cure effectively in environments where moisture cannot reach it.
- Not for: Adhering mirrors or structural glazing. These applications require specialised adhesives designed for those specific demands.
Choosing between Unobond and Adheseal Unobond FC Polyurethane Adhesive
Unobond is a single-pack, gel-consistency polyurethane adhesive designed for cartridge application, delivering structural D4 water-resistant bonds by slightly expanding into surface irregularities. In contrast, consider Adheseal Unobond FC Polyurethane Adhesive when you need a liquid polyurethane adhesive for bulk production or large-area applications typically dispensed from drums. Unobond FC is formulated for different application methods and scale, while Unobond in a cartridge is ideal for more controlled, precise, and smaller-scale bonding tasks where its gel consistency and slight expansion are a distinct advantage.
