This is a column series titled “Listening to the Voice of the Sea”, currently running in Big Comic magazine to great acclaim. The series is written by underwater photographer Kyu Komi, who has over 25 years of experience and more than 20,000 hours of diving work as a marine professional.
As the title suggests, this book compiles the “voices” heard from within the ocean (the Earth itself), expressed through reflective writing and complemented by stunning additional photography. It is a unique “ocean-earth column photo book” that questions and explores the world through the sea.
Featured topics include the gentle giant whale shark, the many benefits of seaweed, underwater auroras created by volcanic activity, Tuvalu as seen from beneath the sea as a sinking nation, the mysteries of coral life, underwater “mystery circles” created by small marine architects, shipwrecks in Truk Lagoon, the dugong as a symbol of marine nature, and even the longest Japanese-named fish. The content blends scientific curiosity with poetic storytelling.
It captures color, breath, and heartbeat—asking how the photographer perceives the current state of Earth from beneath the sea. This is a lyrical portrayal of life as seen through Kyu Komi’s underwater lens, presented with breathtaking photography.
