Description:
Commemorating the 70th anniversary of Contemporary Records! Legendary saxophonist Sonny Rollins' two Contemporary masterpieces, "Way Out West" (recorded in March 1957) and "Sonny Rollins and the Contemporary Leaders" (recorded in October 1958), plus six alternate tracks from his Contemporary career. A 3-CD box set is now available, featuring 6 alternate tracks from Contemporary records. Recorded by legendary Contemporary engineer Roy Dunant, the recordings were remastered from the original tapes by internationally acclaimed mastering engineer Bernie Grundman, who studied under Dunant. Includes an exclusive 2021 interview with Sonny Rollins by Grammy Award-winning music historian Ashley Kahn and new liner notes The timeless classic "Way out West," recorded in 1957, established Sonny Rollins as one of jazz's top tenor saxophonists. With bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelley Mann, Rollins performed "I'm an Old Cowhand (From the Rio Grande)," his own "Way out West," "There Is No Greater Love," and "After You've Gone," based on The high-speed stomp "Come, Gone," and other tunes that Rollins played at his peak can be heard. There is also a great photo by William Claxton of Rollins in western gear (and holding a tenor) in the desert. And The Contemporary Leaders, the next album on Contemporary Records in 1958, was Sonny Rollins' last before he retired after three years, and featured pianist Hampton Hawes, guitarist Bernie Kessel, bassist Leroy Vinegar, and drummer Shelley Mann (all Contemporary Records bandleaders of the era), along with a number of unusual but exciting standard tunes by this great tenor.Rollins creates exploratory and often witty improvisations on songs such as "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody," "You," "In the Chapel in the Moonlight," and roaring versions of "I've Found a New Baby" and "The Song Is You." and often witty improvisations. Great music. The final disc, "Contemporary Alternate Takes," features alternate versions of excerpts from two albums: "I'm an Old Cowhand," "Come, Gone," "Way Out West," "The Song Is You," "You," "I've Found a New Baby" (first released in the mid-80s), are "new versions" that are as good as the classic versions.【パーソネル】Way Out West: Sonny Rollins(ts) Ray Brown(b) Sherry Manne(ds)Sonny Rollins and the Contemporary Leaders:Sonny Rollins(ts) Hampton Hawes(p) Barney Kessel(g) Leroy Vinnegar(b) Shelly Manne(ds)
